When you hit your 20s your personal brand MATTERS (#personalbrandsmatter – I am copyrighting that by the way). If you’re a little lost, I am here to help. I am sharing some great tips on why and how to elevate your personal brand! Enjoy, XO! P.S. There are a ton of pictures in this post!
PLANNER + JOT THINGS DOWN
As you get older, I hope you become busier…more overwhelmed. Staying organized is super important. Keep track of dinner dates, job interviews, homework assignments and more. Jot down positive thoughts, your goals (big and small), or even random ideas.
GIRL, LEARN TO NETWORK
We all know the phrase, “it’s not what you know, but who you know” and it’s true. Creating and keeping relationships with people in your field can help give you advantages over other people as well as create amazing opportunities for you. Through networking you find friends, mentors, biz partners, and even clients.
Ladies, we are millennials. Get on social media. You don’t have to tweet every 45 seconds or post everyday on instagram but be aware on how each one works, it is a skill a lot of employers look for. Crazy how now on resumés a skill is: Twitter. Speaking of socials, if you are in college create a linkedin…it is a must.
UPDATE YOUR RESUMÉ + PERSONAL WEBSITE
Keep your resumé up to date. It is okay for it to change as your interest and experiences do. Also note, that every resume depending on what you’re applying for may be different. With today being more tech forward a lot of college students (and post grad ladies) are creating personal websites for employers to look at. This doesn’t cost big $$$ so don’t worry. There is brand.me, wix for resmué + CV, and about.me (these are all FREE options) and it is a great way for you to stand out. I am currently working on my personal website AND updating my resumé in a MS Word Doc form as well.
BIZ CARDS, SMIZ CARDS
Having a biz card makes you feel old huh? Well it ups your personal brand game on ton. You can hand them out to future employers, people you meet, at networking events, etc. Yes, we are students…but that is not all we are. On your biz card you can have: your name, school, socials, and contact info (phone/email/website) or your name, job/title, socials, and contact info (my preferred choice)! Super simple and will make you look way more professional than someone who doesn’t have anything. There are a ton of places where you can create and make cards. Vista Print or Office Depot all have pre-made card templates and all you have to do is insert your information….but if you’re like me, you’ll want something completely custom and one of a kind. So I designed and created my own. I already have my company’s biz cards but nothing for my personal. If you want a custom and unique biz card to elevate your personal brand, hit me up and I can design some for you!
SOME PRETTY HEADSHOTS
For your resume, business profiles, linkedin…DO NOT PUT A DUCK LIP SELFIE. Just. Don’t. Do. It. I hate to break it to you but it’s tacky and unprofessional. I know not every one has the funds to hire photographer, however, you can take still some nice headshots. Luckily, my sister is into photography and already had a canon and some knowledge behind the camera. I got dressed up and went to Panera and took some pictures. Since that may not be the case for everyone, you can: put on a nice blouse + blazer, find some bomb lighting, and a great friend to take some pictures of you on an iPhone 6. You don’t need a million, just one good one 😉 If you stay in my area, I would be more than happy to recommend my sister who did mine. She’s great.
CREATE A LOGO
Having a logo is a huge part of your personal branding…it’s one of the visuals for your brand. It doesn’t have to be a crazy or unique name or anything, just your first and middle or first and last name. It can go on your biz cards (also apart of your personal brand visuals) – it just sets you apart and shows a ton of professionalism. I have 3 logos…my personal logo, my blog logo, and my business logo. It allows whoever is viewing to match an image on who/what something is.
START A BLOG
Starting a blog is a great way to help establish and elevate your personal brand because it shows off your voice and personality. It also allows you to connect with people and tells a little bit (or a lot) about your life. It also shows dedication, basic editing skills, and more.
CONSISTENCY IS KEY
Remaining consistent is huge when it comes to your personal brand. Especially across all your social media platforms. Your name handle, your bio, and your pictures (sometimes) should all be the exact same or at least pretty similar. You don’t want to cause confusion to anyone who comes across your social media. Don’t be a one way on Twitter and another on Instagram.
